bombs away
in your dreams

the discotheque was nineteen stories above through an unmarked door. tonight the lampless street, already cloaked in lore with all that had happened there over the years, was shrouded in fog as well - one of those rare moments when the marine layer never lifts and somehow makes it's way downtown.

mo had lost her friends along the way. their odyssey to unearth and partake in this underground ritual had been fueled by a potent mix of stimulants and hallucinogens, and the rush of wonderment it brought on quickly devolved into outright confusion. she wasn't worried, they'd survive. and though she felt alone as she climbed the unlit stairwell, muted music dripping down on her from above, she found comfort in the knowledge that she had hit her target and if any of her friends could get their shit together, she would find them here.

the dorian mode was jed's favored diatonic scale to play in for sure. a russian minor scale, to express the loss and desperation one feels upon waking, with a sharp six to make the four-chord major, a glimmer of hope that this day holds something less dim. and his fingers knew it well.

he hadn't slept. the flight from oslo was too early in the morning not to be considered very late at night, and his dream of dozing in the upright and locked position had been shattered by a nearby three year old whom, up until this point in his short life, had only learned that crying gets him the goods.

thirty-eight hours now, eyes open. jed found that sleep deprivation made conversation quite difficult (even harder when you don't speak the language), but made playing his instrument mindless in a way that could cross over into effortless.

the place was fucking packed. there was no chance mo would be able to see the band, her thai genealogy having fated her to a mere five-three. she didn't wear heels on a night like this and she didn't want to take the leering men up on their offers to sit upon their shoulders.

the crowd around her seemed to ebb and flow as ocean waves, filled with people either trying to get closer to the music or unaware of it completely. the current pushed mo into a corner, threatening to drown her. in a desperate gasp for oxygen, she slammed the bar of an emergency exit and spilled out into the night air, the rooftop door easing to a close behind her.

and there she first saw him. sitting alone on the ledge, playing his acoustic to the buildings before him tearing through the blanket of fog, but so softly that only he could hear. without speaking, she sat beside him. and after a long while of listening, she sang. the two of them dangled on that edge, feet swinging over a rolling sea of clouds, and never exchanged a word before taking one another's hand and diving in.

bombs away

palms are read
it's looking bad
a cadaver
any damn day
but you're overhead
and going hot
primed to drop
bombs away

so the sky is gonna fall
it's all the same
we'll be cursing and the cause
of nothing changed
we could disappear like smoke
or curl up in a ball of flame
'cause the dumbest of us know
we are deranged

wanna come back from the dead
be a monster
whadaya say
we could terrorize
and live forever
and they won't take our
bombs away

so the sky is gonna fall
it's all the same
we'll be cursing and the cause
of nothing changed
we could disappear like smoke
or curl up in a ball of flame
'cause the dumbest of us know
we are deranged

voices fill the air
humming out our hymns
though there's no one there
tugging at our limbs
voices fill the air
humming out our hymns
though there's no one there

so the sky is gonna fall
it's all the same
we'll be cursing and the cause
of nothing changed
we could disappear like smoke
or curl up in a ball of flame
'cause the dumbest of us know
we are deranged

dangerous

guess i'm ready for the fall
nothing i can do about it
head against the wall
i don't wanna think about it
since the time i saw you after class
(you're dangerous)
no need to doubt it
on the outside
looking through the glass
(you're dangerous)
i don't wanna live without it
so i guess i'm ready for the fall
(you're dangerous)

i don't mind
that's okay
you and i
gonna make it
at your door
yours to take
waiting for
you to break my heart

bleeding in your arms
looking for trouble
certain that your love'll
break my heart
(you're dangerous)

so i guess i'm ready for the rush
i don't wanna live without it
gonna make me blush
(you're dangerous)
nothing i can do about it
now i know why they're calling it a crush
(you're dangerous)

i don't mind
what they say
you be my
big mistake and
i'll be yours
to take apart
waiting for
you to break my heart

bleeding in your arms
looking for trouble
certain that your love'll
break my heart

i'll be yours
to take apart
do your thing
break my heart yeah ooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo

in your dreams

on the line
down from 96th
to rockaway
all you see
looks the same
might as well be any other day
on the 3

drag your feet
gotta drag this drone
and monochrome
through the streets
count the hours
till you change your noun
from tedium
to heat

i'm in your dreams
i'm in your songs
i'm in those moments you awake at dawn
to breathe
wishing me gone
but when you fall asleep
before too long
you fall for me
in your dreams

on the line
just a drawn out wire
connecting you
to the freaks
turn 'em off
pull 'em from the walls
don't answer boy
no one speaks

locked your doors
and you got your girl
you see the rest
on tv
say goodnight
say you're turning in
she's turning in
to me

i'm in your dreams
i'm in your songs
i'm in those moments you awake at dawn
to breathe
wishing me gone
but when you fall asleep
before too long
you fall for me
in your dreams

so many lies to save you
so nobody tries to save you

chances are
you won't see much past
this episode
just repeats
you who writes
to express yourself
who types it out
then deletes

all along
it's the same old song
you've got a heart
you could break
so you won't put it on the line
just spend less time
awake

i'm in your dreams
i'm in your songs
i'm in those moments you awake at dawn
to breathe
wishing me gone
but when you fall asleep
before too long
you fall for me
in your dreams

second nature

on screen is love overhead
project their moods on her
gold green and red
out in the dark
blue instead
her heart is in her throat
and underfed

why so low
your second nature
lean out
over the edge
on her toes
name that awaits her
jane doe
your second nature

to go head over heels
it's crowded but alone
is all she feels
these days in damn middletown
they never float away
they weigh her down

why so low
your second nature
lean out
over the edge
on her toes
name that awaits her
jane doe
you're a feather as you fall

why so low
your second nature
lean out
over the edge
on her toes
name that awaits her
jane doe
your second nature

mr. electric

feeling sad and lonely
met a man who told me
you should be starry-eyed
got a secret potion
to set wheels in motion
worries and woes subside
and it's a thrill ride

people coming far and wide
guaranteed you're satisfied
set a little bit aside
just to be on the safe side

mr. electric
gonna light up the boardwalk beams
down by the sea
oh man it's hitting hard tonight
don't think i could tough this one out
mr. electric
and the high rollercoaster screams
in harmony
oh man i'm thinking you and i
could spark if you're thinking about me

looking good and surreal
my eyes are pinwheels
i feel my head reel 'round
it'll take a camera
a panorama
to see him hit the town
and he will hunt you down

yeah he don't mess around
never gonna catch me now
'cause i don't even make a sound
as my feet lift up off the ground

mr. electric
gonna light up the boardwalk beams
down by the sea
oh man it's hitting hard tonight
don't think i could tough this one out
mr. electric
and the high rollercoaster screams
in harmony
oh man i'm thinking you and i
could spark if you're thinking about me

remains

burn down my home
my memories hardened
and are bright as chrome
good times escape
while every mistake seems
to be caught on tape

i will go rolling fast
arms out in the rain
feel momentum building
till i lift off ground
like an airplane
love ties you down
to the pains
a billion eyes are watching
fossilized they see what remains
remains

gave up this town
what waste are we left with
when it's boiled down
shine light on me
your image reflected
is all you'll ever see

i will go rolling fast
arms out in the rain
feel momentum building
till i lift off ground
like an airplane
love ties you down
to the pains
a billion eyes are watching
fossilized they see what remains
remains
